Well this was our first attempt at a Starlight Supper with Smooth Radio in aid of Macmillan Cancer. Everyone we know have been touched by this dreadful illness and we felt it would be nice to get involved in helping other charities. The Starlight supper just seemed like a super way of having fun and raising money for a good cause.
I did something this time, that I have never really done before, I delegated. We had recently moved and therefore do not know many people locally, and to a smaller house so couldn't accommodate so many TOGs in our house. So I phoned one of our TOGs and asked her if she fancied hosting the supper. Bids immediately jumped at the chance and set about organising it. Norm and I were to find ways of gaining extra money from the guests.
We decided to have fairly small dinner party for our first attempt, so Bids invited 12 people. As people arrived, they were given a glass of bubbles and seated in the lounge ready for the first part of the entertainment, the horse racing. Norm had a dvd and each guest could bid a pound for as many horses as they wished. We had just enough time for 3 races before dinner and it got very exciting, with half of each race going to the charity and the other half going to the bidders. That broke the ice really well and got everyone in a jolly mood.
One of the guests sings in the local choir, so Norm and I decided we could charge the guests a tenner for a tenor, so Kevin sang us a few songs after the main course. and more money was put in the pot.
Big T supplied the first course which was a fish platter and a vegetarian platter, all the food was superb and of course the wine flowed.
The main course was beef, although a lot of jokes about horses were bandied around. (we should have charged for every time a horse was mentioned)
The pudding was a fabulous chocolate cake made by Edina Cloud and Bids' infamous meringues.
After pudding, and once plenty more wine had flowed we played "pin the moustache on Simon Bates". Malcolm was cruel when he turned some of our guests round, facing them in totally the wrong direction. In the end our lovely hostess won the box of chocolates by getting closer than anyone else.
We finally handed out envelopes and asked people to donate what ever they could afford privately, so there was no pressure.
The evening came to a wonderful end with everyone having had a really entertaining and fun night, but also knowing they had helped in a small way.
The money will be paid in this week and we are very grateful to everyone who joined in, and to those who sent donations. I really looking forward to something again next year. Thank you Smooth Radio for encouraging us to get involved.
We now have a grand total of £431.00, so thank you so much to Bid and Malcolm, and to all who contributed.
Next on the list is the TOGs Marathon, please join in, it is a wonderful feeling knowing you are helping people have a better life, by having fun!! TOGS MARATHON
